Santelmo
Local residents attest to seeing St. Elmo’s Fire in this area and aptly named Santelmo Cove after the weather phenomenon. With pristine, white sand and turquoise waters, it offers one of the best beachfronts in the entire development. Santelmo, one of the marine protected areas of the coast, also welcomes Olive Ridley and Green Sea Turtles (pawikan) as an occasional nesting ground. Giant clams (taklobos) and a diverse variety of sea creatures likewise make this cove an ideal diving and snorkelling spot.
ETAYO
The name “Etayo” was coined after the Sanskrit term for “of the two.” This pertains to the two smaller coves within Etayo, which share a common shoreline. It is believed to have been a refuge of pirate vessels and a popular berthing place of ships because of its thick foliage. Like Pico de Loro Cove and Santelmo, it is a marine protected area and does not permit fishing. This allows it to become a preferred diving spot, due to its endemic sea life.
BALIBAGO
Balibago Cove was named after the Sanskrit word for “small semicircle” to describe the cove’s topography
SUBLI
Subli Cove was named after a favorite local dance performed during town fiestas in the month of May.
ARKAYA
Derived from two Sanskrit words “arka” and “yayu,” Arkaya Cove’s name is inspired by their meaning: essence of the sun and wind.
PAPAYA
Papaya Cove’s name was inspired by the fruit it resembles when viewed from above. On top of being a fishing community, this cove is also the site of mangrove reforestation efforts.
NEELA COVE
Neela Cove was named after the Sanskrit term which means “blue,” for its crystal blue waters. It is also the supposed site of a sunken Japanese warship.
DURADO
Known to be abundant with mahi-mahi (dorado), Dorado Cove was named after the fish caught off of its shores.
PATUNGAN
Named after the district (barangay) in which it lies, Patungan Cove is said to be the favorite getaway of a former Philippine president, who would often take barefoot strolls by the beach.
BUCANITA
“Bucanita” translates to “small opening,” such as its tunnel—the main feature of the cove. One can kayak his or her way through to enjoy views from the other side of the tunnel. On the hills of the cove, the same president who spent leisurely time in Patungan Cove is said to have conducted searches for gold ores in Bucanita Cove.
LIMBONES
Like its neighbor Neela, Limbones Cove is also believed to be the site of sunken Japanese warships as well as Spanish galleons.
BAYBAY
“Baybay” is the Filipino word for “coast,” while “Baybayin” is the historical term used in the ancient Philippine alphabet alibata. This name was used to describe the rock formations of Baybay Cove, which mimic the form of some alibata letters.
At Hamilo Coast, Sustainable Coastal Living in the Philippines will eventually become an everyday lifestyle choice for everyone rather than just a weekend privilege for the few.
